A Personal Approach
Lived Experience + Professional Expertise: Based in Chiba and serving the Tokyo area, I bring a unique perspective to my tutoring: I am dyslexic myself.
Understanding firsthand the specific hurdles neurodivergent learners face allows me to approach every student with deep empathy, patience, and absolute confidence in their ability to thrive.
My methodology is rooted in proven frameworks including the Orton-Gillingham approach and the Alpha to Omega program. I hold specialist qualifications in literacy support from Dyslexia Action and trained in the UK. The Orton-Gillingham Approach
Orton-Gillingham (OG) is the gold standard for dyslexia intervention. It focuses on explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds using simultaneous visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways.
- Multisensory Learning: Engaging sight, sound, and touch (such as "air-writing" or tactile letter tracing) to strengthen neural pathways for language processing.
- Sequential & Cumulative: Concepts are introduced in a logical order, moving from simple sound-letter associations to complex rules, ensuring no gaps are left behind.
- Diagnostic & Prescriptive: Every session is tailored dynamically based on how the student mastered previous material.
The Alpha to Omega Program
Developed specifically for specialist literacy educators, Alpha to Omega is a highly systematic, step-by-step program that breaks down English spelling and reading patterns into manageable, logical building blocks.
- Structured Phonics: Systematically covers high-frequency patterns, syllable structures, and word roots.
- Overcoming Confusion: Helps students make sense of tricky English spelling exceptions by teaching the underlying linguistic rules.
- Building Mastery: Combines dictation, visual cues, and interactive games to solidify decoding and encoding skills.
Hands-on & Engaging Lessons: Sessions are far from dry lectures. By combining these rigorous frameworks with strategy-based card games, visual phonics cues, and interactive tasks, learning remains fun, encouraging, and stress-free.
Educational Assessments
Before beginning regular tutoring, it is important to establish a clear baseline of a learner's current skills. I provide comprehensive educational assessments that identify specific areas of strength as well as areas where further support may be needed.
Using recognized tools such as MALT (Metalinguistic Awareness Levelling Tasks) and detailed grapheme–phoneme evaluations, I assess phonological awareness, reading fluency, and spelling patterns. This process ensures that future lessons and learning targets are precisely matched to the student's individual profile.
Assessment experience with NPO EDGE: Since 2024, I have worked with NPO EDGE, carrying out MALT assessments and Alpha to Omega placement assessments to identify each learner's appropriate starting point and learning priorities.
Comprehensive Assessment
A full educational evaluation covering phonemic awareness, reading, and spelling. Following the assessment session, you will receive a detailed written report outlining the findings, the learner's strengths and needs, and recommended learning targets.
